Solution Focus Therapy

What is Solution-Focused Therapy?

Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT), sometimes called Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), is a goal-oriented approach to counseling that emphasizes solutions rather than problems. Instead of spending long sessions analyzing difficulties from the past, SFT helps individuals focus on their strengths, resources, and future possibilities. The goal is to create clear, achievable steps toward positive change.

How Solution-Focused Therapy Works

In SFT, the therapist collaborates with the client to identify what is already working in their life and how to build on those successes. The process often involves:

  • Exploring goals and what the client wants to achieve

  • Identifying times when the problem is less intense or absent

  • Highlighting skills, strengths, and coping strategies the client already uses

  • Creating small, realistic steps toward progress

This practical, forward-looking method empowers clients to move beyond feeling “stuck” and toward meaningful change.
